You may not feel like you’ve been to the Middle East until you visit a water pipe bar and take long slow draws on a hookah. However, for amateurs, it could be irksome in case they do not know how to pack shisha properly hence ruining the whole experience. Therefore, today I will tell you in detail how to use the right method of packaging shisha so that you will have the best time with your friends at a hookah place
What are some things needed when packing a hookah?
Want to enhance your shisha experience? It all starts with selecting premium shisha tobacco that give a smooth, flavorful smoke. In person, I am into exceptional tobacco shisha flavors that are very rich and of high quality which allow the natural essences of the tobacco to be fully expressed.
Fumari and Tangiers and other brands which use nothing but the best molasses and fruits to produce Hookah Tobacco. If you want a taste of rich full-bodied flavor and aroma with every puff, then this is the best bet. Their tobacco tastes as good as filet mignon; it’s smooth, delicate and delicious.
Now let’s talk about coals. Do yourself a favor: stay away from quick-lights that can give off some nasty fumes. The only thing you need for this purpose are natural coconut coals giving clean, consistent burn really emphasizing the shisha itself..

What is the amount of tobacco that should be packed into the hookah bowl?
NextWe will now move to the important process of packing the bowl. I bet you think you should fill it as much as possible so that you get those big clouds right? Oh noooo! You are wrong my man! Overloading your tobacco is one of the most common mistakes among novices and it makes for small and more painful puffs.
This is how we do it professionally: Do not try to overfill or stuff your bowl like you can’t breathe. This will only clog up air passage in a manner that does not give you a nice smoking experience. Simply add enough tobacco just to fill about 75% of the bowl; that’s all.
I would advise using about 20 grams of shisha per regular Egyptian style bowl. Such amount will evenly distribute tobacco in the surface without causing big “mountains and valleys” that prevent close contact between foil and tobacco leaves. When we talk about premium phunnel-style ceramic bowls that have got deeper chambers in them, one may need even less than 20 grams for filling since the design of these bowls makes air flow easier.
What is the proper way to fluff the tobacco in the bowl before smoking?
Below, is my method: First, I break up any lumps in the tobacco until it gets separated. Simply spread the juice or glycerin all over the leaves so that they become sticky enough.
After that, you can take a hookah fork and gently pass it through the tobacco going in circles to create some spaces between strands. Do not mix too much. Rather give it a slight lift and loosen with your fingers. Think pillow fluffing; it means soft feathery tobacco through which air can easily flow. Also remember to keep it fluffy after fluffing! Let the shisha stay cushiony. Trust me; properly fluffed tobacco has a tremendous effect on smoking your hookahs.
How do you wrap a hookah?
When everything is ready? Then I take off about 4-5 inches of heavy duty foil without tearing them. Since wrinkled foil restricts airflow, I fold this sheet in two making sure there was an even surface for cooking bowl cover. You will never have excessive smoke leaking out if done rightly because the tightest lid ever covers this pot!
Then I use toothpicks and other sharp objects to make tiny holes across it. These holed foils permit the required amount of air for tobacco burning.
First of all, we must see that tobacco has been ground very fine. Trust me on this little detail – it will make a huge difference in every smoke you have! The finely ground shisha burns slowly and evenly releasing maximum flavoring while burning. No large pieces allow heat and air to flow smoothly through for the most richly delicious taste on your tongue.
Now that you have gotten the perfect packing density, start applying the perforated foil screen. Drape this screen on top of your bowl loosely securing it in place using its rim. This acts as insulation between burning coals and shisha itself to prevent charring while still enabling the tobacco to smolder gently releasing smoke and vapors.
