Why is my nitrous oxide tank freezing up during use?

Frosting/icing is a normal phenomenon when using N₂O (nitrous oxide) cylinders: When you release a large amount of gas, the liquid N₂O inside the cylinder will rapidly vaporize to replenish the gas phase pressure. The latent heat required for vaporization will carry away heat from the cylinder wall and contents, causing the cylinder temperature to drop rapidly and water vapor to condense on the outer wall to form a frost layer.

How should I store nitrous oxide tanks safely?

Indoor Storage: If you are going to store something inside, make sure you use a special space for compressed gas and keep the air flowing well.

Always keep the cylinders in an upright position. To keep them from tipping over, use chains, straps, or special brackets to attach them to a wall or other substantial structure. If a cylinder falls over and the valve breaks, it might become a dangerous missile.

When not in use, valves must be tightly closed and have steel Valve Protection Caps on them. These caps keep the valve from being broken or opened by accident during an impact.

No oil or grease at all (very important): You must not let cylinders, valves, or regulators touch any oil, grease, or organic solvents.
