As a professional cannabis enthusiast, I am often asked what my “favorite” smoking tool for smoking cannabis is, and without hesitation, my answer is a bong, especially a silicone bong. Not only are they small, very easy to carry when traveling and very clean, however, like any smoking tool, they can develop unpleasant odors over time. I believe many friends have encountered this problem, so after I tested a variety of odor removal methods, I wrote this blog about How To Clean Silicone Bong Smell.I believe these methods can be very effective in helping you remove odors from silicone bongs, especially for beginners. You only need to follow three simple steps to get a clean silicone bong
What causes odor in silicone bongs?
The odor in silicone bongs primarily stems from resin buildup and the absorption of smoke particles into the porous surface of the silicone. Additionally, when we inhale smoke, the particles in these smoke contain tar and other compounds that pass through the silicone bong Sometimes it will cling to it, causing the smell to linger. There may be many people who don’t know what resin is. Now let me explain some knowledge about this topic
what is Resin
Resin has a viscous texture, like syrup. It generally accumulates when smoking herbs or concentrates. Resin is mostly formed by the condensation of oil, tar, and ash in smoke and contains the main psychoactive ingredients of cannabis, such as THC and CBD , so we feel that the color of the newly generated resin is slightly yellow, and will gradually darken over time, turning into an opaque brown solid, and the old resin will emit a pungent and unpleasant smell,The picture below shows the shape of the resi
What cleaning products can perfectly remove smells from a silicone bong?
So after understanding the main reasons for the smell of silicone bongs, what cleaning tools do we need to use to remove them? We do have some recommendations for cleaning supplies! For example, Isopropyl alcohol, Baking soda, Vinegar, Lemon juice, Hydrogen peroxide, Natural dish soap, Bong cleaners and Bleach. We have personally tested these cleaning products to remove odors, However, I personally prefer using bong cleaners and baking soda, so let’s start with how to clean using bong cleaners and baking soda. I’ve also attached some useful videos
Four methods to remove smell from a silicone bong
Use Bong cleaners
Here we choose 420 Cleaner, which is specially used to clean silicone bongs. It is composed of natural citrus essential oils, plant extracts, etc. It has a very strong cleaning power and has the effect of eliminating tobacco and mold odors. The most important point, and my personal favorite, is that 420 Cleaner can not only clean silicone bongs, but is also suitable for cleaning glass, plastic and other materials of bongs.
Then we pour out the water in the silicone bong and add an appropriate amount of Bong detergent and warm water to the sink. This amount is determined based on the size of the bong you use. You can refer to the indicators we list below.
Small bong:10-20ml
Medium bong: 30-60ml
Large bong: 60-120ml
Extra large bong: 120-240ml
Next, mix Bong Cleaner and water and let the bong soak for a while. This will help the 20 Cleaner penetrate into the bong surface to dissolve the stains.Next, we need to apply Bong cleaner with a soft cloth or brush and carefully clean all surfaces and corners of the bong.
However, due to the complex structure of bongs, there are areas that are difficult for us to reach and clean thoroughly. In this case, you need to repeatedly soak and rinse the bong until the rinse water runs clear.
But we also need to remind you “Do not use it directly after cleaning! Instead, you need to dry it completely in the sun.
2. Use Baking soda
Pour away the water from the bong and add an appropriate amount of Baking soda to the sink.
Sprinkle Baking soda directly on the surface of the bong, or make a paste with warm water and apply it.
Use a brush or sponge to scrub the inside and outside of the bong, applying Baking soda’s paste mixture.
Let Baking soda soak on the bong surface for a few minutes to fully exert the decontamination effect.
Rinse the bong thoroughly with warm water until no powdery residue remains.
Use a paper towel or cloth to wipe away any moisture on the surface of the bong.
3. Use lemon juice
Cut a lemon in half and squeeze the juice onto the smelly areas of your bong, or rub the lemon halves directly onto those areas for added effect.
Before starting to use lemon juice, we rinse the silicone with hot water, which can effectively remove loose dirt
Pour the lemon juice into the container. I like to add a small amount of salt at this step, as it can provide an extra abrading effect for us.
Soak the silicone bong and its separated parts in a mixture of lemon juice and hot water. Let them soak for at least 30 minutes, or rub half a lemon directly on the dirt-rich area. The natural acidity of lemon can effectively dissolve the resin on the bong.
The next step is very simple. You just need to use a small brush to scrub all corners after soaking.
4.Use white vinegar
Mix white vinegar and hot water in a 1:1 ratio. If the Bong is very dirty, you can increase the proportion of white vinegar appropriately.
Place the various parts of the Bong into the vinegar solution and let them soak for at least an hour, longer will provide better cleaning results.
For a more thorough cleaning, leave the soft-bristled brush on for about 5 minutes.
But among the above cleaning methods, my favorite is to use Bong cleaners for cleaning, because its cleaning effect is recognized by me.
Whether you’re a beginner or a pro, I encourage you to try these methods for cleaning your silicone bong. Nothing could be simpler than these methods, and I have proven their feasibility over the past dozen years. So I’ve been using these methods since I started smoking weed.
